The painful thing is that here in Greece as a European country that believes in rights, refugee women’s rights were denied and excluded... when I asked for international protection and told my story to those responsible for seeking asylum, I get refused; it's like they told me that I'm lying

People in the neighbourhood could hear the screams, but no one would say anything because he was the head of the family. The shame always falls on the woman, not the man. I remember her, walking with her head down. And other stories of women like this, hiding in the night, forgotten in the morning.

I am still learning every day about the reality and pervasiveness of gender-based violence. I grieve my own role in it, which I know is still ongoing in many ways, but I also strive on, hopeful that I am now moving in a better direction.

I don’t want any little girl to feel that she is not woman enough for society, that she has to limit her abilities to survive in this world. And most of all, I don’t want any little girl to grow up in a society where she can’t evolve because she is afraid of the hand or the words of a man.

These were women who would tell me their stories of abuse, how they were under the control of other men, sometimes their own husband or family. Some of them found no other way to pay for their childrens’ operations, their medicine. I was crushed with compassion for them and I decided to fight.

And I started to get angry... that a stranger approaching me in a violating way is such a common phenomenon, and that my “I’m not interested, no thank you" is never enough, but must be supplemented by "I am in a relationship". Because the only "valid" reason to decline is that I am "someone else's".
